Diana Vreeland

I've been immersed in all things Vreeland, as you might imagine, with my new job (though actually, she is a long-time heroine of mine, as regular blog readers will know). This month sees the release of a wonderful new film about her, that I do recommend, by Lisa Immordino Vreeland -- 'The Eye Has To Travel' (and I also urge anyone interested in fashion to read Lisa's book of the same name). Meanwhile, here is a piece that I wrote for today's Sunday Telegraph...

Great article, Justine, and congrats on the appointment. Vreeland is a fascinating subject, will look out for the film/book.
Harper's Bazaar always makes me think of the final scene of Rear Window - when Grace Kelly checks Jimmy Stewart has fallen asleep in his wheelchair (with his now two broken legs), tosses aside the worthy travel book she has been reading and, with evident pleasure and relief, opens a copy of Harper's Bazaar. One of my all-time favourite films - good one to watch on a hot summer night in the city.

Kate -- thank you so much for the reference to Rear Window -- like you, I love the film, but hadn't remembered the Harper's Bazaar shot (I must find a place for it somewhere in the magazine).

So interesting and I love that red room. I have always wanted to paint a room red in my house for those cold days. I loved Jackie Kennedy's style and just read Jackie and her books which was very interesting. Now I want to see that Vreeland movie.

Enid, the movie opens in London on September 21, but hopefully you'll see it soon in South Africa.

I hope it is still on in London when I come in October.

Many congratulations on your new appointment, so exciting, and so well deserved. Looking forward to purchasing my first copy.

I look forward to the The Eye Has To travel on the 21st, I just watched the Bill Cunningham in New York movie which is lovely, if you haven't already seen it.

Enid, let me know when you're coming, and I'll check on the film dates.
Lilac: thanks for the suggestion -- I haven't seen the movie yet, but will do so, on your recommendation!

That movie looks very intriguing! I loved reading DV, years ago. It was women like Diana Vreeland and the Duchess of Windsor and, of course, Chanel, (and later, Isabella Blow), who taught me how style and personality transcended physical beauty. As someone who felt a bit like an ugly duckling as a child, this was transformative.

Very, very thrilled for the new appointment, Justine! I love the UK fashion mags and look forward to your vision!

A very interesting article. I will look out for the film but probably won't come here. We went to se A Royal Affair last night in Melbourne and the clothes were just magnificent.

Another bit of six degrees......Colin has been reading Judy Cornwell's biography and it mentions that Joyce Grenfell's aunt was Nancy Astor.....an interesting bit of family history I guess!

Lovely piece, Justine! I've always found Vreeland fascinating; a true aesthete. I can't wait for the film. I wonder where she used to purchase those glorious turbans?! Congratulations and celebrations on your new role!

Thank you. I'd like to know about the turbans, too, and whether those jewels were by Chanel. She was certainly a great fan of Mademoiselle.
