The February issue

In a flurry of packing for a trip to Paris tomorrow, to see the couture shows, but crossing my fingers that I get there. Eurostar has just cancelled my train in the morning -- snow on snow on snow -- so I'm hoping to squeeze onto the next one, because it would be very sad to miss Dior couture. Meanwhile, here is the February issue; hope you enjoy it... (and if you do, please consider subscribing; though I know some of my lovely blogosphere friends have already done so, for which many thanks!).

Lovely Justine - there is a sparse elegance to your new covers, that definitely captures ones attention. Hope it is going well and you catch that train to Paris... ( throw a snow ball for me too!)

Here goes my thoughts on the Feb issue. I was just thinking that there were too many adverts and too much about fashion when I came upon the wonderful articles The A List,Terence Stamp, First among Equals, Inspiration and Silver Screen Dream Team. I so enjoyed all the aforementioned and the look is great. They air freight the new copies in but still have the December issue on the stands so I can compare covers and i love the new clean look. I hope all your snow has melted and that Paris was great. What are you reading ? What are all the bloggers reading ?

I am in love with Harpers Bazaar and so have subscribed. I hope you got to Paris! I saw some photographs from the Chanel show - looked totally amazing.

Have been reading (and loving) Harpers Bazaar on the iPad - way cheaper, faster, and easier than waiting for it to arrive in the bookstore here!

Have a wonderful time in Paris - I saw some photos from the Dior show, with the incredible fabrics and embellishments. Somehow they looked weightless, even with all the luxurious detailing.

Enid: I've just finished Clare Clark's Beautiful Lies - an impulse buy at Daunts last week that turned out to be 500 pages that zipped by and along the way I learned a bit about 1880s London when Buffalo Bill's Wild West show came to town. Lined up next - Angela Thirkell's High Rising and then Stella Gibbons' The Matchmaker.

Also I'm salivating while reading a Scandinavian cookbook, Signe Johansen's Scandilicious - must be all this freezing weather and too much Borgen. I want make Norwegian lemon and almond cake and homemade gravadlax now.

Scrivener, I *loved* High Rising! I have all the Angela Thirkells - it took years to collect them - but I read them all out of order so it is very strange to see characters just getting married and having children and then jump back in time and see them as schoolchildren.

I am reading some new cookbooks - Naomi Duguid's Burma and the new Ottolenghi Jerusalem. And also putting together a "travel library," thankfully now all downloaded onto an ereader instead of a suitcase loaded with books...leaving me room to buy other things on my travels!

so.....searching for displacement activities and feeling justly down in the January dumps...I reached for my Harpers Bazaarand read Writer's Block, William Nicholson's account of the highs and lows of getting anything made and am fabulously inspired....so it's back to the book and the continued the quest to get someone to read something...and I'm so going to buy those 'street smart' Office shoes!!

Hello everyone; I finally got to Paris (and back again), despite the snow. Shows were amazing; particularly Dior and Chanel. Read more here: http://www.harpersbazaar.co.uk/fashion/inside/justine-picardie-on-paris-couture-dior-chanel-giambattista-valli?src=rss
Feeling very sleepy this evening, after yomping through even more snow in the Scottish highlands. Have eaten large quantities of chocolate cake, as a consequence of fresh air and icy temperatures, and now trying not to fall asleep in front of the fireplace.
Thank you to everyone for feedback on Bazaar's February issue. March is printing now... hope you like it!
As for reading: I have been dipping into a new biography of Nancy Astor, though it's hard to beat James Fox's earlier book on Nancy and her sisters. But what a huge character she was...

Her daughter Phyllis was quite a character too. I grew up on the Lincolnshire estate of her husband Lord Ancaster and remember her driving round the village in a Mini Moke and waving enthusiastically at us school kids.

Hi Justine - a long long time since you and I were in touch! I recently went to visit a very elderly - very stylish - friend of mine who had had a stroke, I chose Harper's to take as a gift as it looked so glam and gorgeous. I didn't know until I heard your lovely intelligent voice on BH on Sunday on R4 that you are the editor. Hope all well in your world, love Viv xx

Oh, what is the new biography called? I am fascinated with that era and would love to read it, having read the Fox some time ago.

I am also getting HB via my iPad and enjoying it. How you keep up all that travelling in Euopean midwinter amazes me!

I'm reading Penelope Lively's Heat Wave and as always with her books am thoroughly enjoying it....and haven't finished Bess of Hardwick yet.
