PS... more good shoes

Just been emailed a picture of these shoes by my friend Julietta, who is going to wear them for her 40th birthday party. They're by Rupert Sanderson, and I feel they should be shared. They seem to me to be an intriguing mix of Miss Jean Brodie, Mayfair dominatrix, and the first Mrs de Winter.
As you may have noticed, my shoe obsession is mounting, as my book deadline nears. Doubtless Herr Doktor Freud would have something to say on the subject of heightening anxiety and precipitous heels. Or maybe that's a scene from an unmade Hitchcock movie? (Almost certainly based on a Du Maurier story...)
Actually, Freud was quite interested in buttons; undone, of course...

Those shoes are fantastic. If Cathy had been created in the 21st century, these are the shoes she would've have worn, once she'd married Edgar.

P.S. Also - does your obsession over shoes mean that you've been writing about Chanel's shoe collection? How fascinating!

Also, read a book the other day that made me think of you - 'Two lipsticks and a lover' by Helena Frith Powell. It looks at the French attitude to clothes, food, schooling etc, and is completely wonderful. You'd love it - even if you weren't writing about Chanel!

Yes, can definitely imagine Cathy stomping about the place in these shoes, trampling over her nearest and dearest, as usual...

I LOVE those shoes. Alas, I can't wear heels without wobbling.

Have you ever read Loving by Henry Green. i picked it up at a sale and it intrigues me.

I tend to get confused between henry green and henry miller. But I think the latter is the one that wrote about sex in a vaguely literary manner, and the former is (was) a toff who wrote about the aristocracy and their servants, and various erotic goings-on, but in an even more elliptical manner than H. Miller. Green possibly preferable to Miller (have vague recollection of reading Loving as a student), and actually, should probably put him on my reading list.

PS. Both Henrys almost certainly keen on shoes.

Some of Henry Miller is less literary and frankly blunt, especially Under the Roofs of Paris (Opus Pistorum), which was commissioned by a Los Angeles bookseller for a dollar a page. Miller seems determined to make sure his patron got his money's worth, that's for sure.

Will have to look for Henry Green, as if I didn't have enough half-finished books lying about already.

(Sorry, made a typo and had to start over).

As a granddaughter of a former shoe manufacturer and the daughter of a shoe fanatic (when I was growing up my mother never wore anything except Bally and Ferregamo, besides sneakers and hiking boots), I love shoes, but I only like the expensive ones, and therefore can't afford very many...

I think one would need exquisite scarlet toe nails.........and elegant ankles.

Definitely. Scarlet toe nails always good, in my experience, but ankle straps not necessarily flattering.

i think the shoes are fabulous...but considering the age of 40.... it sounds weird.

Keep a look out for raised subdials- Bentley GT supposed to be flat and flush with the face, not raised or domed. Also, another great test is to hold the Navitimer World head and try to move the bracelet strap from side to side- a Breitling Avenger will hold firm. And keep your eye on the strap Chrono Superocean - the screws and patterns should be well-made and smooth, and the joints should be flush, not raised or rounded.
