While I was gone...

Apologies for absence; have been lost in computer with Coco Chanel. Day and night, night and day; it's all blurring into one. Have been thinking mostly of little black dresses and white satin evening gowns and reflections in the looking glass. Really, have gone quite mad, through the computer screen and out onto the other side of the mirrored walls of Mademoiselle's private apartment, but will return later.

Going through the mirror to Mademoiselle's apartment has got to be better than the places Alice's looking glass led to!

Oh, I think it's not so very different. Have been dancing the Lobster Quadrille.

I find myself signing that song quite a lot in Oxford - when stuck behind slow tourists ...
Somerville's cat could be a Cheshire - he wags his tail but one never knows if he's angry or not.

I am the lurking blog reader (one of the many!) who spoke to you at Cheltenham before your talk about Mademoiselle! Just to say "Chin up and keep going" and thank you for the fascinating talk which would have kept me and the rest of the audience gripped for a further hour, had it been permitted! You are a superb speaker (as well as writer) I've never had much interest in fashion (not since my Biba boots disappeared) but will definitely get hold of the book once it's published. It was fun hearing about your research - that convent perhaps holds some material for another book!

Caroline -- it was so nice to meet you, and put a voice and a face to one of the (previously) silent readers of the blog. I'm glad you enjoyed the Cheltenham talk about Chanel -- I found I had a great deal to say about her, particularly to an appreciate audience who asked such interesting questions.

Having loved My Mother's Wedding Dress, I can hardly wait for Coco. Just saw it for pre-order on Amazon! I will order it through my local bookstore.

My daughter (the red head) was using this computer! The above comment is mine. (I thought it was taking her a long time to write that paper) Come to think of it, she'd love My Mother's Wedding Dress, too.

Well, it would be v. nice to have a cross-generational appeal, given the subject matter. As it happens, I'm talking about 'My Mother's Wedding Dress', and Coco Chanel, on Radio 4 tomorrow morning -- Woman's Hour, if anyone wants to listen in.
