The Closet Thinker...

... is thinking of sequinned jackets this week.

I like the idea of a sequinned jacket, but I think you would have to be very, very careful as to what you did/wore with it. I love Chanel et al (although I could never afford Chanel) but I am now even more a huge fan of Ann Demeulemeester (also can't afford except when exceptionally lucky on ebay) - I love AD's goth/rock ode to Patty Smith clothes and she has done some wonderful sequinned scarves in the past, but an entire jacket?? ... you would not want to look like an entertainer out of Butlins and yet I do see the possibilities ...!

I love the idea...but for me, a sequined scarf slung around the neck is just the right amount of flash.

AD is v.good. But check out the Chanel sequinned jacket. I'll see if I can find a picture to convince the sceptics.

I looked at the runway pictures at Style.com and sighed over the sequined blazer. Beautiful, but not for me. Then again, you never know unless you try it on...

Going off slightly at a tangent, your fashion writing reminds me it was about ten years ago - perhaps a little more, maybe twelve - that I started reading Vogue, both British and American. I was a teenager moving up from Seventeen and Sassy and other younger-skewing fashion magazines; the writing was so different from the familiar, the clothes so out of reach. That was the era of Voyage and those velvet-trimmed slip dresses and beribboned cardigans that cost more than a year's clothing allowance. For some reason, maybe my somewhat Anglophile reading habits in my early years, I have always loved British fashion writers more than American ones.

Thinking about this, I conclude that it isn't really the idea of a sequinned jacket that puts me off, it is the idea of myself, middle-aged and a UK size 12, in one. (But I would still really love to see that Chanel jacket).

I may be young, but I am, ahem, short and round, and while not exactly the shape of a disco ball, I have the suspicion that a sequin-covered jacket (even if a wonderful shade of gray instead of bright silver) would be not particularly inspiring. However, I did walk downtown and buy a beautiful Dries Van Noten scarf adorned with black sequins, with a multicolored motif at one end and fantastic tassels. I will think of you, Justine, whenever I wear it.

I also wanted to say I finally managed to read your lovely Natascha McElhone interview last night, and I cried when I read it. She has been one of my favorite actresses since Mrs. Dalloway, and I always have this image of her in my mind, standing in a doorway, her hand outstretched, the light behind her. She is a beautiful, luminous woman and actress, and has endured such pain with such grace. I can only hope to one day have the kind of relationship where nothing is left unsaid, incomplete, where the only thing left is love, even after unendurable sorrow.

Naturally, you can only assume that even when Hardy himself is gone, his extremely popular hardy shirt will continue to dominate the market and see a tremendous level of interest from consumers who are happy to utilize the creations of hardy shirts who has managed to come from nothing and make a name for himself among the stars.
