Carmen Callil joins the blog...

Have you seen Carmen's comment on the previous post? She is the founder of Virago, and has been thrilled to read everyone's comments. She'd also welcome hearing from you all -- you can do it here, and she is waiting for your responses.

Just a simple thank you for many happy hours reading. I discovered Virago when I was in the 6th form and it has been very important for my reading life. My dissertation at the the end of my first degree was on the provincial novel and I used your Susan Ferrier's Marriage (alongside Austen and Maria Edgeworth)- a wonderful book which I don't think I would have otherwise found. I have enjoyed many of your titles and more importantly given many of them as (well received) presents over the years, so thank you.

As someone who 'grew up' with VMCs and discovered so many unjustly neglected women writers whom I might never otherwise have read, I am thrilled to be able to thank you personally for hours of pleasure and enlightenment. The covers were a large part of these discoveries because I always knew that when I picked one up I would never be disappointed.

Thank you Carmen for all the years of reading pleasure you've given me. I discovered so many wonderful authors through Virago & can see the green spines on my bookshelves from where I sit now. At least we can still find the old editions secondhand. I would love Virago to republish a series of the most loved Classics. They could run a poll on the website. I think they'd be surprised by the passion we all feel for the authors we discovered, thanks to you.

VMC's apart I have to tell Carmen that since I heard her speak at Dartington a couple of years ago on her superb book Bad Faith not a drop of Taittinger champage has crossed my lips and nor has a L'Oreal anything entered the house. Her exhortation was so powerful I get an electric shock if I even pick it up! It was one of the most moving events I have been to there in many a long year.

I have just finished reading "Bad Faith". What an extraordinary book - what feeling, what depth, what incredible research it leaves me feeling humble that someone can produce such an outstanding story - having lived through this era, I actually felt strong empathy with some of the characters. Thank you Carmen Callil - now I must find a copy of the DVD "Le Chagrin et la pitie". I think you will be hard put to ever produce a better work.
