White blossoms, midwinter

I'm off to Wiltshire to do a talk about Chanel at Bowood tomorrow; and very much hoping that the freezing fog lifts so that I can see the glories of the garden in winter. Last time I was there the rhododendrons were in magnificent bloom, huge drifts of them, and the wisteria was blossoming in the walled garden. It seems such a long time ago, but I'm sure there are hidden pleasures to be found in the frosty landscape of Capability Brown.

Capability Brown always makes me think of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, which I am rereading (even funnier and smarter than I remember).

My paperwhites are shooting up like mad; I think they will bloom very soon. I plan to stagger the plantings so I can have waves of white blossoms all winter long.

I always loved thw white garden st Sissinghurst and this week we went to a wonderful garden at Vergelegen and the white graden there was also so beautiful. There is something to be said for blankets of white, something soothing and good for contemplation. Enjoy your travels with Coco.

ooh I envy you your trip although the city feels only half full right now, which is rather good, so while snow stops play I am happy to be able to find a seat on the bus and go see the sunflower seeds at Tate modern....

Trying to send Bowood photos from my new iphone to my laptop, and failing. Why am I so technically inept?
